
He was both a pragmatist and visionary [...]. Brian Allison identified eurocentrism as a problem in art education very early on and his four domains curriculum included a cultural domain designed to rectify this. In 1972 he spelled out cultural learning objectives in the monograph 'Art Education and Teaching about Arts of Africa Asia and Latin America' [...]. Brian Allison’s most significant contribution to British art education was to establish a research culture. From the early years at Leeds when he developed The Allison Art Vocabulary Test (since translated in several languages) research was central to his thinking. Because he understood disseminating knowledge as the major vehicle for stimulating and challenging ideas, he devoted long hours and his own finances to creating and publishing research data base. His first British Index of Research in Art and Design with 274 studies was published in 1975 with data typed up from index cards...
